The Mirror

An enormous mirror, an impossibly small doorway, and a perfectly reasonable question.

There's a huge, one-piece mirror covering an entire wall in my apartment. I measured it. Two metres by 2.44. The front door? 1.92 metres high.

My first thought: there you go. Proof we're living in the Matrix.

A few days later, I measured everything again. Turns out, it does fit through the door. Just barely. You have to get the angle exactly right, squeeze it through millimetre by millimetre, and somehow get it around the staircase without killing yourself.

But why?

Ten centimetres smaller and nobody would've noticed. Why go through all that trouble? Why did it have to be that big?

So I asked my landlady. Was it some kind of challenge? Were they trying to get the largest possible mirror into the apartment? What were they thinking?

“We weren't thinking,” she said.
